Redirecting… Hello, It is with immense anger and desperation that I write to you today. Since Beijing unilaterally imposed its National Security Law (NSL) on Hong Kong, it has accelerated the moulding of Hong Kong into its image. Beijing has tightened its authoritarian grip and created an atmosphere of terror in Hong Kong through arbitrary arrests, attacks on the press, and holding relatives of activists as hostage. Prominent figures like Andy Li, who coordinated the independent Election Observation Mission to Hong Kong with MP Kenny Chiu, along with journalist Wilson Li, and activist Agnes Chow have also been arrested. We are witnessing the ever-quickening destruction of a once-free city that countless Canadians call home. On the 27th, it was reported that Mr. Li had been arrested at sea on the 23rd, fleeing to Taiwan in search of asylum: a dangerous and perilous journey. Ottawa MUST provide resettlement pathways for those looking to flee mass detention, torture, rape, and persecution in China. Why has our government not taken strong measures for human rights? Why has there been no immigration scheme for Uyghurs facing mass-detention and genocide in concentration camps? When we see Beijing’s grip tightening around not just its own people, but around Canadians too – we ask, what would it take to see more than hollow statements expressing “concern”? We urgently demand that the Canadian government: 1. Join the international community in imposing sanctions against human rights offenders in Hong Kong and China 2. Immediately open a path for resettlement to help Hong Kongers, Uyghurs, and others flee mass detention, torture, rape, and persecution Canada seeks to exemplify the ideals of Liberalism. If we truly want to embody these values, we must rise beyond empty statements of “concern.” As Canadians, we cannot sit idly as our elected government mulls about in a time of great urgency, all the while Beijing seeks to intimidate us into silence and submission – even here in Canada. justin.trudeau@parl.gc.ca, DPM-VPM@dpmo-cvpm.gc.ca, Francois-Philippe.Champagne@international.gc.ca, Minister@cic.gc.ca, Rob.Oliphant@parl.gc.ca, Omar.Alghabra@parl.gc.ca, Soraya.MartinezFerrada@parl.gc.ca, IRCC.Minister-Ministre.IRCC@cic.gc.ca Safe Haven for Hong Kongers NOW
